The rutting red Deer is one of the highlights of the highland year , between October and November the head-dress made of grass and moss is a common sight among the stags trying to make themselves look bigger. They bellow and roar to warn off other stags and to impress the females .Stags often appear black after smearing themselves with peat from boggy pools ,glands secrete a dark fluid to broadcast information about age and sex .By the end of the rut the males may shed up to twenty percent of there body weight . The shot was taken on a 300 mm lens ,with a canon 1DS ll. rut 1
